Online Notepad Dark Mode — Beautiful Writing in Low Light
Whether you're a night owl, working in a dimly lit room, or simply prefer dark interfaces, NoteKraft's dark mode notepad delivers a carefully crafted reading and writing experience that's easy on your eyes.
How to Enable Dark Mode
Switching to dark mode in NoteKraft takes exactly one click:
- Look for the 🌙 moon icon in the top-right corner of the header
- Click it — the entire interface instantly transitions to dark mode
- The icon changes to a ☀️ sun icon, indicating you can click again to switch back
Your preference is saved in localStorage, so NoteKraft remembers your choice the next time you visit.
Automatic System Detection
NoteKraft automatically detects your operating system's color scheme preference using the prefers-color-scheme CSS media query. If your device is set to dark mode (in System Preferences on Mac, Settings on Windows, or Display settings on Android/iOS), NoteKraft will start in dark mode without you having to toggle anything.
Once you manually toggle the theme, your explicit choice overrides the system preference. To "reset" to automatic detection, clear your browser's localStorage for NoteKraft.
The Design Behind Our Dark Theme
Not all dark modes are created equal. A common mistake is simply inverting colors — white becomes black, and everything looks harsh. NoteKraft's dark theme was designed from scratch with these principles:
- Dark, not black: Our background (
#0B0F19) is a very deep navy-black, not pure #000000. Pure black on OLED screens can cause a "smearing" effect when scrolling. Our choice avoids this while still looking beautifully dark. - Layered surfaces: Cards and the editor area (
#131825) are slightly lighter than the background, creating a subtle sense of depth without using heavy shadows. - Reduced contrast for comfort: Body text uses
#94A3B8instead of pure white. This reduces the overall brightness differential, which is easier on the eyes during extended reading. - Accent colors adjusted: Our indigo accent shifts from
#6366F1in light mode to#818CF8in dark mode — slightly lighter to maintain the same perceptual contrast. - Smooth transition: When you toggle themes, all colors transition over 300ms with an ease curve. No jarring flash.
Benefits of Dark Mode for Writing
| Benefit | Details |
|---|---|
| Reduced eye strain | Less total light emission means less fatigue in dim environments |
| Better focus | Dark backgrounds make text the visual focal point, reducing peripheral distractions |
| Battery savings | On OLED/AMOLED screens, dark pixels use less (or zero) power |
| Less blue light | Dark themes naturally emit less blue light, which can interfere with sleep |
| Aesthetic preference | Many users simply prefer the look and feel of dark interfaces |
When to Use Dark Mode vs Light Mode
Dark mode isn't always the best choice. Here's a practical guide:
- Low-light environments → Use dark mode. It reduces glare and is easier on your eyes.
- Bright sunlight → Use light mode. Dark screens are harder to read in direct sunlight because the screen's brightness can't compete with ambient light.
- Extended reading → Some research suggests light mode (dark text on light background) is slightly better for reading comprehension. For writing, either works well.
- Before bed → Dark mode. Less blue light emission helps avoid disrupting your circadian rhythm.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes! NoteKraft has a beautifully designed dark mode. Click the moon/sun icon in the header to toggle. It also auto-detects your operating system's dark mode preference.
On OLED and AMOLED screens (most modern phones and some laptops), dark mode can save significant battery because black pixels are physically turned off. On LCD screens, the savings are minimal.
In low-light environments, dark mode reduces the total amount of light emitted by your screen, which can reduce eye strain. In bright environments, light mode with proper brightness is generally more comfortable.
