Online Notepad with Spell Check — Catch Typos Instantly
Good writing starts with good spelling. NoteKraft's online notepad supports browser-native spell checking out of the box — misspelled words get a red underline, and you can right-click for suggestions. No plugins, no extensions, no setup.
How Spell Check Works in NoteKraft
NoteKraft doesn't implement its own spell checker. Instead, we leverage the spell checking engine that's already built into every modern browser. This approach has several advantages:
- Zero additional load time — no dictionary files to download
- Multi-language support — your browser's spell checker supports whatever languages you've installed
- Custom dictionaries — words you've added to your browser's dictionary (names, technical terms) are recognized
- Privacy — basic spell checking happens locally on your device, not on a server
How to Use It
- Type normally in the NoteKraft editor
- Misspelled words appear with a red wavy underline
- Right-click the underlined word to see suggestions
- Click a suggestion to replace the misspelled word
Enabling Spell Check by Browser
If you don't see red underlines under misspelled words, spell check may be disabled in your browser settings:
| Browser | How to Enable |
|---|---|
| Chrome | Settings → Languages → Spell check → Toggle on |
| Firefox | Settings → General → Language → Check "Check your spelling as you type" |
| Safari | Edit menu → Spelling and Grammar → Check Spelling While Typing |
| Edge | Settings → Languages → Enable spell check toggle |
Basic vs Enhanced Spell Check
Some browsers (Chrome, Edge) offer two levels of spell checking:
- Basic: Uses a local dictionary stored on your device. Fast, private, works offline.
- Enhanced: Sends text to the browser vendor's servers for more accurate checking (similar to Google Search spelling). More powerful, but sends your text to external servers.
If privacy is a priority (and if you're using NoteKraft, it probably is), we recommend using basic spell check. It keeps everything local, which aligns with NoteKraft's privacy-first philosophy.
Limitations
Browser spell check is useful but not a full writing assistant. It won't catch:
- Grammar errors — "Their going to the store" won't be flagged
- Contextual misspellings — "its" vs "it's" may not be caught
- Style issues — passive voice, wordiness, or tone mismatches
For deeper writing assistance, you'd need a dedicated tool like Grammarly. NoteKraft's purpose is speed and simplicity — we give you the basics without the bloat.
